Act 1

The Doctor and Peri materialize on the dry, sandy surface of Androzani Minor, a desolate planet the Doctor notes has not changed in a billion years. Their initial exploration reveals fused silica patches and monoskid tracks, indicating recent spacecraft activity and a heavily laden vehicle. Following these tracks, they descend into a phosphorescent underground cave system, where they inadvertently discover a smuggler's cache of gas carbines and poison volatilisers—enough weaponry to equip a small army. Before they can fully process their discovery, General Chellak's Federal forces capture them, immediately accusing them of supplying arms to the android rebels led by Sharaz Jek. During their interrogation, the powerful and ruthless Chairman Trau Morgus, head of the Sirius Conglomerate and controller of the valuable Spectrox, intervenes via video link. Despite Chellak's initial intent to interrogate them for information, Morgus, driven by a desire for public morale and a disdain for "traitors," overrides the General's authority and orders the Doctor and Peri's summary execution. Confined to a detention cell, the innocent travelers face imminent death, their pleas ignored. Meanwhile, Morgus discusses the critical importance of Spectrox with the President, revealing the intense political and economic pressures fueling the ongoing war, further highlighting the high stakes of the conflict into which the Doctor and Peri have unwittingly stumbled. Their fate appears sealed as Salateen arrives to lead them to their execution, while Sharaz Jek secretly monitors the events.
