The story begins with the Doctor and Peri escaping from Sharaz Jek's camp, only to be pursued by Jek's androids and the mercenaries led by Stotz. Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor's desperate escape from a relentless Magma creature, a chaotic start that immediately thrusts him back into danger. He evades the beast, but the larger conflict quickly reasserts itself. Simultaneously, a crucial deception unravels at the army's operations room: the real Major Salateen, long held captive by Sharaz Jek, returns to General Chellak, exposing the android impersonator who has been feeding Jek critical intelligence. This revelation fundamentally alters the army's understanding of the conflict, transforming their previous failures into a clear strategic vulnerability. Chellak and Salateen swiftly formulate a plan to exploit this exposed spy, intending to use the android to disseminate disinformation to Jek, thereby setting a trap. Meanwhile, Sharaz Jek captures the Doctor, subjecting him to interrogation regarding Peri's location. The Doctor, already suffering from the debilitating effects of Spectrox toxaemia, is then handed over to Stotz and his mercenary crew, who transport him aboard their spacecraft, bound for Androzani Major. During a comms check with his superior, Stotz inadvertently reveals the Doctor's presence to Trau Morgus. Morgus, a shrewd and powerful industrialist, recognizes the Doctor and immediately connects him to the previously faked execution. He deduces that the President orchestrated the deception, signaling a profound conspiracy at the highest echelons of power. This realization redirects Morgus's immediate objectives, compelling him to investigate the President's motives and positioning him to exploit the escalating conflict for his own ambitious ends. This act establishes the key players' updated understanding of the situation and initiates their respective counter-strategies, setting the stage for a complex web of betrayals and power plays.

Act 2

This act escalates the conflict through calculated betrayals and audacious power grabs. Chellak initiates his disinformation campaign, sending the android Salateen on a false reconnaissance mission with bogus coordinates, confident Jek will fall for the trap. However, the android immediately reports this deception to Jek, who, now aware of Peri's location in Chellak's quarters, plans her retrieval. Concurrently, Trau Morgus executes a ruthless power play. He meets with the President, subtly plants seeds of paranoia about an assassination attempt, and then, under the guise of offering safe passage, pushes the President to his death down a lift shaft. Morgus swiftly announces the President's "tragic loss" and declares his own "peace mission" to Androzani Minor, effectively seizing control of the Conglomerate. While these political machinations unfold, the Doctor, suffering from Spectrox toxaemia, successfully frees himself from his chains on Stotz's spacecraft and takes control of the vessel, initiating its return to Androzani Minor. Back on Androzani Minor, Jek successfully abducts Peri from Chellak's quarters. He then attempts to manipulate Peri, revealing his deep-seated hatred for Morgus, whom he blames for his disfigurement and downfall. Jek further reveals his counter-strategy against Chellak's impending attack: he has altered the android recognition codes, ensuring the army's belt plates will no longer protect them, turning their planned assault into a deadly ambush.

Act 3

The final act of this installment intensifies the immediate threats and sets the stage for a dramatic confrontation. General Chellak discovers Peri's disappearance from his quarters, confirming that Jek has successfully countered their deception. This loss of Peri, who was intended to guide the army's assault, leaves Chellak's forces vulnerable and exposed. Jek, now with Peri captive again, details his sophisticated trap to her: he has reprogrammed his androids' recognition codes. This means the army's belt plates, designed to render them immune to android attack, will now be useless, transforming Chellak's planned invasion into a devastating ambush. The army is unknowingly marching towards certain destruction, with Jek poised to exploit their false sense of security. Simultaneously, the Doctor struggles to bring Stotz's spacecraft down through reentry, battling the controls for a manual landing. His Spectrox toxaemia worsens, complicating the already perilous maneuver and threatening his life. Stotz, locked out of the cockpit, desperately attempts to breach the door, threatening the Doctor with violence as the ship hurtles towards the planet. The episode concludes with the Doctor's ship plummeting towards Androzani Minor, an imminent crash landing, and the army advancing towards Jek's altered defenses, leaving the fate of all characters hanging precariously in the balance.
