Act 1

The Doctor and Peri materialize on Titan Three, where Peri prevents the Doctor from abandoning the unconscious Lieutenant Hugo Lang, who attempted to murder the Doctor. Despite the Doctor's initial reluctance, he revives Lang, and Peri discovers Lang's identity as an Interplanetary Pursuit officer. The Doctor, experiencing a resurgence of his full powers, senses a massive danger threatening the universe, which he connects to Lang's delirious mentions of abducted children. Using the TARDIS scanner, they locate a symmetrical, unnatural structure on the asteroid's surface, confirming the presence of an alien base. Despite the high radiation levels and Peri's concerns, the Doctor insists on a reconnaissance mission, leading them to infiltrate the base through a skylight, driven by the perceived threat to the universe and the mystery of the children.

Act 2

Inside the Titan 3 Base, Professor Edgeworth oversees the Jacondan twins, Romulus and Remus, who are forced to perform complex equations for the sinister alien, Mestor. Mestor appears, threatening the twins with mind removal if they refuse to work, forcing them to comply. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Peri navigate the base's service ducts, but their reconnaissance is cut short when Jacondan guards, Noma and Drak, capture them. Brought before Edgeworth, the Doctor attempts to bluff their way out as pilgrims, but then recognizes Edgeworth as his old friend and mentor, Azmael, the former Master of Jaconda. Azmael, now seemingly under Mestor's influence, initially denies the recognition but eventually concedes the Doctor's identity. He then reveals his true, desperate motive: saving his people, even if it means sacrificing his friendship with the Doctor and imprisoning him and Peri within the base, setting a self-destruct sequence to prevent interference.

Act 3

While the Doctor and Peri are imprisoned, Lieutenant Lang awakens in the TARDIS, discovering his gun's powerpack missing and begins searching for it. Within the base, Peri discovers the self-destruct mechanism, which the Doctor confirms is irreversible and set to detonate within minutes. Recognizing the urgency, the Doctor quickly devises a plan using the twins' completed equations and the base's revitalizing modulator. He improvises the modulator to function as a short-range time displacement device, intending to send Peri back to the TARDIS ten seconds in the past. After successfully sending Peri, the Doctor realizes his own watch has stopped, complicating his attempt to follow her precisely. He makes a quick adjustment to the console, steps into the modulator, and vanishes, leaving his fate uncertain as the base prepares to explode.
