Terror of the Vervoids Part 3

The Doctor must stop a deadly Vervoid plant creature and its accomplices from taking over a space liner, while navigating through a complex web of experiments gone wrong and confronting the consequences of playing with nature.

The Doctor finds himself on a space liner where a series of mysterious events and murders are unfolding. The story begins with Ruth, a lab assistant, who has been subjected to an experimental cross-fertilization procedure that has turned her into a plant-like creature. The crew is trying to isolate and reverse her condition, but things take a dark turn when it is revealed that the experiment has produced a Vervoid species that is intent on killing humans. The Vervoids, led by Lasky and Doland, begin to take over the ship, and the Doctor must work with Mel to uncover the truth and stop them before it's too late. As the story progresses, the Doctor and Mel discover that the Vervoids are using the ship's systems to further their own agenda and that they are not just mindless killers but are actually a highly organized and intelligent species. The Doctor and his companions face numerous challenges as they try to outsmart the Vervoids and prevent them from reaching Earth, where they plan to establish themselves as the dominant species. The story is a thrilling adventure that explores themes of science, ethics, and the dangers of playing with nature.

Act 1

The segment opens with the Doctor and Mel forcibly removed from Ruth's isolation room as Lasky and Doland administer gas to the transforming woman, who now exhibits a large leaf growing from her head. Doland offers a deceptive explanation for Ruth Baxter's plant-like condition, attributing it to a "cross-fertilisation" accident, while the Doctor's attempts to intervene lead to his arrest by Guard Rudge for a false alarm. Travers, the Commodore, initially dismisses the Doctor's concerns, viewing him as an irresponsible meddler. However, the narrative quickly escalates as Janet reports Mr. Kimber's disappearance, prompting an investigation. Mel discovers a distinctive leaf in Kimber's cabin, and crucially, the service ducts reveal large plant beings (Vervoids) systematically piling human bodies, confirming a widespread, non-human threat. This discovery forces Travers to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and "begin to cooperate" with the Doctor. The act culminates in Mel's harrowing discovery in the gymnasium: she records Vervoids discussing their secret plan to eliminate "animal-kind," only to be gassed and dumped into a waste disposal unit. The Doctor, piecing together clues from the recording, races against time to rescue Mel from the pulverizer, narrowly saving her and solidifying the immediate, murderous intent of the Vervoids.

Act 2

Following Mel's rescue from the pulverizer, the Doctor and Mel discover the incriminating recording has been removed from the console in the gymnasium, eliminating their immediate proof and forcing them to continue their investigation without direct evidence. The ship's communications are then sabotaged, rendering the Hyperion Three completely isolated and preventing any external assistance or information. This act significantly deepens the internal conflict among the scientific team responsible for the Vervoids. In the Hydroponics Centre, Bruchner vehemently confronts Lasky, destroying computer printouts and condemning their "obscene experiment," highlighting the ethical chasm between them. The Vervoids, now aware of Bruchner's opposition, declare his death their priority, perceiving him as a direct threat to their goal of reaching Earth. The tension culminates when Bruchner physically attacks Lasky, further fracturing the human resistance. The narrative then shifts dramatically as Bruchner, escaping a Vervoid attack, takes over the bridge. He zaps Travers, seals the doors, and deliberately alters the ship's course, creating an urgent and immediate crisis that threatens the entire vessel and its occupants, setting up a direct confrontation for the next segment.
