The narrative beats that drive the story
The narrative opens on Iceworld, a desolate trading colony, establishing Kane's ruthless ambition to forge an invincible mercenary army through cryosleep-induced memory erasure. His enforcers, Kracauer and Belazs, oversee the brutal recruitment process, highlighted by a mercenary's fatal attempt to escape. Concurrently, the Doctor and Mel arrive, drawn by a mysterious signal, and quickly encounter Sabalom Glitz, a disreputable space trader. Glitz's substantial debt to Kane, incurred through a fraudulent deal, becomes the inciting incident when Kane's forces confiscate Glitz's spacecraft, demanding repayment within 72 hours. The legend of a hidden dragon and its treasure, introduced by the rebellious waitress Ace, intertwines with Glitz's possession of a treasure map—a map Kane secretly orchestrated Glitz to acquire, embedding a tracking device within it to lead him to the prize. The Doctor, captivated by the prospect of adventure, forms an uneasy alliance with Glitz and Ace to pursue the treasure. As Kane solidifies his control by destroying Glitz's spacecraft and entering cryosleep, Ace's defiant spirit emerges. After being fired from her job, she reveals her past as an Earth-native, transported by a time storm, and her proficiency with explosives. She utilizes her homemade 'Nitro Nine' to clear an ice jam, demonstrating her resourcefulness. The act culminates in Ace and Mel's arrest and Ace's direct confrontation with Kane, where she rejects his manipulative recruitment offer and uses her explosives to facilitate Mel's escape, while Glitz abandons the Doctor in the treacherous lower levels.
