Doctor struggles to lift the Zero Cabinet

The Zero Cabinet becomes an unbearable physical burden for Nyssa and Tegan to transport, its mass increasing with every step despite their best efforts. They initially attempt to use the electric wheelchair, but after it crashes into the stream and fails catastrophically, they are forced to lift the cabinet manually through dense undergrowth and across uneven terrain while concealing it in bracken near Castrovalva’s cliffs.

Nyssa’s ornate mantilla is torn loose during her desperate attempt to recover the submerged wheelchair from the stream, stripping away the delicate veil that once marked her Trakeni elegance. Wet and bedraggled, the mantilla is abandoned in haste alongside the failed device and inoperable wheelchair, symbolizing both the loss of old comforts and the urgency stripping away refinement.

Nyssa’s molecular adjustment device, already precarious after its earlier dunk in the stream, becomes completely soaked and jammed when she slips into the water again while attempting to retrieve the wheelchair. The ruined tool can no longer assist in stabilizing systems or repairing damage, leaving the companions entirely dependent on physical labor to transport the Doctor.

The electric wheelchair is deployed by Nyssa to assist in moving the Zero Cabinet but crashes into the woodland stream after the companions lift the cabinet off it. The impact triggers a violent short circuit, causing a brief burst of flames before the device is rendered inoperable. Its failure forces manual transport and loss of Nyssa’s waistcoat.

Ruther’s assegai spear remains sheathed and unused as he silently tracks the companions’ movements through the bracken, the polished weapon serving as both a tool of intimidation and a latent threat. Its mere presence heightens tension in the woodland, signaling Castrovalva’s preparedness to enforce its boundaries with lethal force if necessary.

The dense bracken provides the companions with fragile concealment for the Zero Cabinet during their halting progress, allowing them to press the ferns together to mask its form from prying eyes. This concealment becomes the site where Ruther silently observes from his hidden vantage, turning the bracken from shelter into a stage for unseen surveillance and looming threat.

The steep cliffs of Castrovalva rise as a daunting obstacle behind the woodland, their jagged pink granite resisting ascent just as the companions’ strength is waning. While the cliffs offer the only viable route to the castle, their height and exposure make the final push toward Castrovalva feel like a race against time before nightfall overtakes them.

The woodland stream acts as a deceptive obstacle, its rushing current and muddy banks trapping and soaking both the electric wheelchair and Nyssa during her frantic attempts to retrieve it. The failed crossing disrupts progress, destroys equipment, and symbolizes the journey’s growing peril, its waters singling out Nyssa for calamity and loss.

Castrovalva’s silent sentinels, represented by Ruther, maintain unobtrusive surveillance over the woodland approaches, ready to intercept or intimidate travelers who approach without sanction. Their presence turns an otherwise ordinary woodland crossing into a gauntlet where every rustle may signal judgment rather than nature.
