The thick scrubland bushes become Steven’s lifeline after his ambush fails. As Edal orders the patrol to flank his position, Steven crawls into the dense foliage, using the bushes to obscure his movement and evade capture. The bushes’ tangled branches snag at his clothing, slowing his escape but providing crucial concealment. Their role is purely functional—offering a narrow window of survival in an otherwise exposed terrain—but they also symbolize the precariousness of Steven’s situation: one wrong move, and the bushes could rustle loudly enough to give him away.
