The sliding door serves as a literal and symbolic threshold between the City’s sterile, oppressive interior and the savages’ wild, suffering exterior. It opens to reveal the dying man’s collapse and the savages’ sudden appearance, framing the door as a gateway to both danger and truth. When it slides shut, it seals Dodo inside the City, trapping her with the mechanical hums and bubbling noises that foreshadow the City’s predatory systems.
