The ladder serves as a fragile lifeline in this moment, a vertical descent into despair. It is the last physical connection to the upper levels of the tomb, now rendered useless by the sealed passage below. Its rungs, cold and unyielding, frame the characters’ entrapment—each step downward was a step toward this inevitable dead end. The ladder’s presence is a cruel irony: it offered a path, but that path leads only to a barrier. Its metal structure, usually a symbol of human ingenuity, here underscores the expedition’s helplessness.
