Sarah drags the dead tree across the ruins and lowers it into the camouflaged pit to serve as a precarious ladder for descent. Though unused in this event, its dragging noise and presence mark the space, drawing Roth’s attention and later becoming the fulcrum of her improvised tool for control over Roth’s movements and cooperation.
