Doctor meets Thals amidst Spiridon's deadly fog

Transparent plastic face masks are clamped over the Doctor’s nose and mouth by Taron to prevent inhalation of airborne fungal spores during his first breaths outside the TARDIS. The flimsy devices fog quickly and display faint signs of creeping spores on their inner surfaces, dramatizing the immediate danger even to protected tissue.

Before: Stored in Taron’s survival pack, respirators sealed and brittle with age; edges designed to snap shut around cheeks and forehead.

After: Applied to the Doctor’s face, elastic straps tightened behind his head, then presumably removed once the antifungal spray takes effect.
