Sandbags

Coarse burlap sacks crudely filled with damp sand, stacked in uneven knee-high perimeters around the trench’s lower walls. Their sagging vertical seams and salt-stiffened weave betray long exposure to the elements, while muddy footprints indent the sand packed between them. The Doctor and Bettan press their bodies against these makeshift barriers, their rough texture grating against the Doctor’s coat as he urges resistance. The sacks’ presence is purely symbolic—offering no real protection against Dalek firepower, but serving as the only concealment available in the open trench.

Purpose

To provide improvised cover from ground-level patrols by creating visual and physical obstacles that mask movement and absorb incidental shrapnel.

Significance

Their faded condition and inadequate protection highlight the futility of conventional resistance against superior technology, while their use as temporary concealment underscores the extreme vulnerability of the characters in the trench.
