Mailer's Cell Draughts Board and Pieces

A draughts board and its red/black pieces used in Mailer's cramped Stangmoor cell during the prison riot. Prison officers Vosper and Powers initially carry the board into the cell, setting it on the floor or bunk to play a game alongside tea while on guard duty. Mailer ignores it and snaps rejection, instead grabbing his hidden gun. Later, the Doctor and Jo Grant play on the same board and pieces, deliberately ignoring the Master's entrance to assert dominance and heighten psychological tension. The game becomes a symbolic shield against intimidation until the Master's threats force the Doctor's reluctant cooperation. The pieces clack softly as the Doctor and Jo slide them across the board, turning a simple game into a tool of defiance against the Master's authority.
