The artificial illumination system buzzes, then extinguishes without warning, erasing the quarry’s sterility under flood-lit scrutiny. Walters’ handheld scanner display flickers out in sync, converting the exposed trench into a claustrophobic abyss where rock walls press inward and the cavern mouth yawns hungrily. The failure leaves footing treacherous and the alien hunter’s movement detectable only by sound and touch.
