Public Telephone

A sturdy metal payphone bolted to the wall in the station's central concourse. Its black handset hangs slightly crooked from the cradle, the coiled cord stretched taut after prolonged use. The receiver is warm to the touch where previous callers have gripped it. The coin slot gapes expectantly, its inner mechanism glinting dully under the station's harsh lighting. A small paper flyer with smudged train schedules is taped beside the dial, fluttering each time someone brushes past.
