The three-stage cut-out mechanism is the linchpin of the black light system’s failure sequence. Drathro toys with it during his standoff, and it visibly jams under the Doctor’s frantic attempts to shut down the system, ultimately detonating and destroying Drathro and the apparatus.

Doctor fails to stop black light surge

The Doctor identifies the linear sequence of three heavy metallic levers as the final barrier between survival and annihilation. As he descends into the corridor, the device visibly trembles; its third stage jams under his desperately applied force, and moments later the entire apparatus detonates with a thunderous release of black light and shrapnel.

Before: Seemingly functional three-stage cut-out integrated into the black light system’s control rack.
