Sir Gilles's Charger
The destrier pacing beneath Sir Gilles during the tournament, its powerful frame tensed for the impending trial by combat. Barded in the sigil-embroidered crimson and gold trappings of the crown’s favored knight, the horse responds to Sir Gilles’s tight rein: muscles quivering, ears pinned, nostrils flaring white as he glares across the field at Hugh’s mount. Spittle flecks the bit where Gilles’s nervous grip tugs the reins; the thick leather harness creaks with every controlled shift of weight. When King John’s command halts the contest, the charger stills in one fluid motion, hooves planted like siege towers amid the volatile crowd.
