Shovel

A plain iron shovel with a splintered wooden handle, its blade caked with damp clay from the miners' ditch-digging work. The miners swing it with brutal efficiency—not the controlled strikes of traditional labor, but violent arcs meant to crush rather than turn soil, wood splitting audibly under impact. Its weight in Jack Ward's hands feels unnatural, as if the instrument of earthworks has been repurposed into a bludgeon.
