A splinter of smoldering wood retrieved from the bakery’s dying oven fire, still glowing at one end with embers in the heartwood. Richard Mace sections it roughly with his knife, splitting off smaller brands for himself and the Doctor to use as improvised weapons and last-resort torches. The wood’s dry crust resists burning, making the embers last longer, but the brands are fragile; Tegan’s breaks in her grip when she tries to wield it, dousing the flame prematurely.
