When Turlough hurls it into the flames of the ship’s furnace, the ball shatters explosively—freeing him from coercion and sealing the conspiracy’s collapse.

Turlough rejects darkness to destroy the Black Guardian

The jagged diamond crystal, part of the Enlightenment sphere, is presented by the White Guardian as a reward to Turlough. He hurls it with full force at the Black Guardian, who is destroyed in a burst of flames. Afterwards, Turlough retrieves a black crystal from his pocket—evidence of his corrupted pact—and casts it into the fire, breaking the curse.

Before: Contained within a ceremonial metal ball and held by the White Guardian; uncorrupted and radiant.

After: Shattered upon impact with the Black Guardian; the Black Guardian reduced to flames. Turlough’s black crystal is consumed in the furnace, dissolving his bond forever.

Doctor foils Wrack’s escape and exposes conspiracy

Enlightenment is presented by the White Guardian as a glowing ball holding a jagged crystal. Turlough hurls the ball at the Black Guardian, who is engulfed in flames and destroyed by the act. The crystal turns black and is then cast into flames, freeing Turlough from coercion and terminating the Black Guardian’s contract.

Before: Contained within a ceremonial metal ball, pulsing with cold light and offered as a prize to Turlough by the White Guardian.

After: Shattered in flames, the crystal blackens and burns, signifying liberation from corruption and destruction of the Black Guardian’s physical form.
