Glass-Covered Crypts (Frost-Lined Coffins)

A linear bank of human-sized, coffin-like enclosures: thick curved glass panels set into metal frames, rimed with hoarfrost and ice. Each crypt bears a metal sealing band and a small environmental control bezel above; several panes show radial scratches or jagged gaps where seals were pried, one cover sits lifted and another is emptied, while others enclose blackened, desiccated corpses and one hides a perfectly preserved, unconscious woman. Worf wipes frost from a pane to peer in as Data moves down the row cataloguing breaches and taking clinical readings.

Purpose

To maintain long-term stasis and preservation of human occupants by providing hermetic cryogenic containment and environmental control for suspended bodies.

Significance

Functions as the central forensic set-piece that shifts the mission from survey to urgent rescue and criminal investigation: the broken seals and emptied crypt imply deliberate tampering, the lone preserved survivor raises immediate medical and diplomatic stakes, and the degraded pods embody the mystery driving the crew's ethical and procedural response.
