In the depicted event they close and hold station as a sacrificial shield, coordinate phaser and torpedo responses, integrate sensor and tactical data, respond to engineering warnings (antimatter containment), and liaise with damage-control teams to sustain ship functions under combat conditions. They operate under the ship's CO and first officer within a clear chain of command.
