A craggy slope on the flank of an active volcano, its blackened basalt face split by a narrow fissure where a spacecraft once crashed. The ground here radiates residual heat through cracked obsidian plates, the air thick with the mineral tang of sulfur and the metallic bite of overheated rock. Flickering torchlight casts jagged shadows from the fissure’s jagged teeth as wind whips embers from old campfires, their smoke vanishing instantly into the updraft. A steep drop separates the site from the safety of the village below, the path a treacherous scramble of loose stones that testify to past attempts—some successful, most fatal.
