Portreeve's Upstairs Window
The narrow window squats low in the plaster, its leaded panes warped by centuries of damp and warping geometry. Smoke from the town’s surging boilers veils the glass in greasy streaks, dimming autumn sunlight to a sullen smear. A catch of blackened iron resists the Doctor’s grip, the latch groaning like a waking beast when forced. Through the grimy pane, the balcony’s weathered flagstones press close—just enough space for two bodies to squeeze through sideways, shoulders scraping against the frame. Cold air rushes in as the window swings wide, carrying the metallic tang of Castrovalva’s failing energy and the distant thunder of collapsing masonry. At their feet, the balcony’s edge drops precipitously into the plaza below, where torchlight flickers against jostling crowds.
