Wessex Castle

Perched on a rocky prominence above the moors, Wessex Castle is a sprawling stone stronghold of grey limestone whose crenellated towers catch the frequent mist like the prows of beached galleons. The outer walls rear against a lowering sky, their arrow slits throwing long shadows across the courtyard where flags whip in the salt wind. Inside, vast vaulted halls echo with the clatter of trenchers and the growl of braziers that fail to banish the drafts whispering through arrow-slit windows. The great hearth in the lord’s chamber smoulders but cannot overcome the damp that stains the pennants with mildew, while the flagstones beneath the high daïs remain slick from the dregs of wine and the muck tracked in by armored retainers. Off the main hall, narrow passages twist upward to the watchtowers, their spiral stairs worn concave by centuries of boot heels. Despite its grandeur, the castle’s ramparts already bear the scratches of Irongron’s siege engines, and the air carries the metallic tang of tension—iron tools, sweat, and the quiet dread of a garnison awaiting assault.
