Minsbridge Wildlife Sanctuary

A sprawling preserve of dense woodland and brackish lakes where manicured trails curve around ancient oaks and rustic lodges anchor the conservation effort. The air holds the sharp pine scent of resinous woodland mixed with the earthy damp of a recent storm, dampening the growl of the approaching Land Rover’s engine. The vehicle crosses a weathered wooden bridge whose planks sag under the weight, the water beneath black and still save for slow ripples where trout dart beneath the surface. Beyond the bridge, the lodge squats low against the underbrush, its stone hearth chimneys belching smoke against the twilight. The path narrows past fences woven from split logs, marking the boundary of Arthur Ollis’s tracking route, his boots pressing deep into loam now slick with fallen needles. Shadows stretch long from the thickening trees, the sanctuary’s artificial quiet shattered only by the occasional cry of a distant bird—unnaturally stilled.
