Upper Castle Shaft

A vertical utility passage embedded within the rigid stonework of the Kroll Pit’s cavern system. Its iron rungs descend into darkness, slick with condensation and streaked by soot from the methane refinery’s exhaust above. The shaft’s narrow bore restricts light to a thin shaft that barely pierces the underground gloom, casting stark shadows where ancient wiring hums with residual current. The air is cool and still, thick with the mineral reek of buried rock and the lingering metallic tang of industrial activity. From its camouflaged opening flush with the cavern floor, the passage offers a direct route to—then a precipitous drop into—the deeper galleries where Kroll stirs. Every creak of metal and echo of distant voices rolls upward, announcing the cavern’s unrest long before the trembling begins.
