The reception area of the hospital’s pathology lab fronts the main entrance, its linoleum floor dulled by decades of reagent spills and scuffed black shoes. Fluorescent strips flicker overhead, casting an uneven blue-white glare that turns the dust-moted air into a slow swarm. A curved baize-topped desk crouches under a sign in chipped black plastic: PATHOLOGY LABORATORY – STAFF ONLY PAST RECEPTION. Behind the desk, a steel chair sits bolt-upright, back rigid against the wall. The air smells of ozone and bleach, with an undercurrent of something metallic from the lab beyond. Voices carry through the half-open door leading to the specimen rooms, the words sharp and clipped, the urgency already migrating from the corridor into the space like a shiver.
