Quarry Lane

A narrow, rutted track of churned earth and frozen mud, this deserted lane cuts through the bleak expanse of an Antarctic quarry. The surface offers no traction—deep potholes and rivulets of meltwater turn the path into a treacherous slog, streaked with mineral dust and the dull sheen of compacted ice. A single limousine, its high-sided body barely clearing the deepest ruts, stands parked broadside as if abandoned, though its engine ticks behind a half-lowered window. Flanking the lane, towering spoil heaps of sand and crushed stone loom like a man-made cliff, their grains shifting under the ceaseless katabatic wind that whistles between the piles. Pools of blackened slush reflect the dim Antarctic twilight, mirroring patches of oil-streaked snow. Every footstep pulls at boots sunk halfway to the ankle, every breath tastes of iron and cold machine oil.
