Terraces of Fitzroy Park

The terraces rise in staggered stone platforms from the sloping grounds of Fitzroy Park, their wide limestone slabs weathered by decades of London drizzle. The air clings with the damp earth of Highgate’s woodland edges, carrying the faintest whiff of mown grass and the acid tang of iron-rich runoff pooling in the crevices between flagstones. Low wrought-iron wall lanterns line the edges, their once-gilded glass now softly bruised by oxidation; their weak amber light pools in small, trembling halos against the encroaching dusk. Between the terraces, yew hedges clipped into sharp rectangles block sightlines, forcing movement along narrow gravel paths where footsteps crunch on crushed stone. The park’s upper terraces surrender suddenly to the open lawns of Highgate’s skyline, the change marked only by a single, gnarled cedar that knees above decades of pruning. Here, the land drops away fully, revealing the city’s rooftops framed in bruised twilight.
