The Priory entrance (also referred to as the Main Priory Entrance in some accounts) sits at the convergence of a paved approach and the priory grounds, framed by dense evergreen shrubs whose low-hanging branches form a prickly natural veil. The foliage reaches just to shoulder height, offering concealment to those who press close while still allowing observers a sliver of view through the gaps. The pavement meets a gentle slope downward, the damp soil seeping through fabric as figures crouch in tense stillness. One hidden gap provides a narrow frame for silhouettes of approaching guards and their dogs against weak porch lights, their movements distorted by the foliage. Broad stone steps lead to heavy oak doors, bathed in the cold glow of exterior lanterns, their light barely piercing damp evening air. The paved approach narrows beyond the steps where it meets weathered gravel paths, slick with recent rain. Guards pace with slow precision, torch beams cutting arcs across puddled ground. The Priory’s flint walls loom behind, with dim windows reflecting faint internal firelight. The air carries sharp scents of crushed pine needles, damp earth, autumn leaves, and metallic tang of impending rain or revolver oil.
