Flooded Pool

A stagnant excavation sump at the mine’s lowest level, its murky water rising nearly to the rim of the broken concrete lining. The pool’s surface reflects the flicker of failing emergency lights, broken into erratic shards by shimmering oil slicks that spread in slow, rainbow-hued swells. Beneath the water’s black mirror, corroded pipework groans under pressure, venting intermittent bursts of sulfurous vapor that ripple the liquid surface like a disturbed pond. The air is dense with the metallic reek of dissolved parrinium dust and the acrid tang of overheated circuitry, thick enough to coat throat and nostrils. The pool’s floor is a soft collapse of rotting timber props and rusted cable spools, half-submerged and slick as riverbed stone, turning every step treacherous. Around the rim, puddles of thick effluent cling to the concrete edges, reflecting the muted glow of the dying mine lighting.
