The pipes beneath Helen A’s city stretch as a jagged network of corroded metal corridors barely high enough to stand erect, their riveted seams oozing moisture that plasters streaks of rust down the walls. The air hangs thick with the scent of damp iron and sour, long-rotten food scraps smeared underfoot in the uneven metal decking. Flickering emergency bulbs cast smears of sickly yellow light that betray the almost total absence of real illumination—more often the space slumps into abrupt patches of blackness where bulbs have burned out or the power briefly fails. Pipes broader than doorways coil overhead, their surfaces slick with condensation and dusted with fine soot from the street grates far above; smaller tributaries drain trickling black water that gurgles through grates set flush with the floor plates. Makeshift pallets and torn bedding huddle in alcoves carved out between the pipe joints, their occupants reduced to skeletal silhouettes wrapped in rags. The place is cold enough that breath hangs visible, yet still warmer than the surface city, breeding a claustrophobic warmth that feels almost protective despite its squalor. Every footstep rings loudly against the resonant metal and echoes away into the maze, masking movement and voice alike—an acoustic shield that doubles the isolation felt by those who live below.
