The Backs

The Backs stretches along the River Cam as a ribbon of manicured college backs faced inward toward the water. Narrow punts drift beneath stone bridges worn smooth by centuries of scholars and tourists, their hulls skimming past windows lined with ivy and wisteria. The autumn air carries the scent of damp stone and fallen leaves, mingling with the occasional shout from distant quadrangles. Sunlight flickers on the river’s surface, fragmented by crisscrossing oar strokes and shifting shadows cast by the arches above. This stretch of water, reserved for leisure and quiet contemplation, becomes something less predictable when the punt pole sticks fast in the silt—and the river, conversation, and everything familiar tilts slightly off course.
