Coal Hole

A narrow service tunnel beneath the lighthouse's generator room, originally used for disposal of combustion debris from the coal furnace. The shaft descends from the generator room’s far wall through a rusted iron hatch into a compressed cavity barely wider than a man’s shoulders, its corrugated walls streaked with soot and glistening moisture from the humid environment. A rusted metal ladder clings to the shaft’s side, the rungs slick underfoot with decades of accumulated grime. The air carries diesel fumes from the generator, the sharp metallic tang of wet charcoal, and occasionally traces of ozone—an olfactory layering reflecting both past and present uses. Emergency floodlights barely pierce the gloom, their dim beams catching flecks of ash and drifting condensation. Described by the Fourth Doctor as a place of haste and secrecy, where bodies and refuse were historically fed into the furnace’s maw without ceremony, though modern usage appears limited to maintenance access.
