Underground Entrance Pool

A shallow, subterranean pool fed by seepage from the ruin’s ancient foundations, its water black and still where it gathers in the cracked flagstones beneath the church’s collapsed choir. The surface acts as a reluctant mirror, catching the dim glow of Sarah’s fleeing torch beam in flickering ripples before she splashes through to the lower passage. Echoes from Federico’s men’s boots ring off the damp stone walls as they pursue, their shouts distorted by the close, damp air thickened with the scent of mildew and old candle wax. The water rises no higher than the tops of Sarah’s boots, but it spills cold across her ankles with each step, the chill cutting through the thin leather of her shoes. Between the ripples, she glimpses slick moss clinging to the uneven stone, the only sign of life in this forgotten basement sanctuary.
