Priory Gardens

The garden lies built into the curve of Chase’s mansion, its lawns wedged between the estate’s stone walls and the mansion’s leaded-glass windows. A single gravel path splits the overgrown boxwoods and touches of ornamental yew, their leaves dark and glistening under the low winter sun. Sandstone edging stones mark the border once carefully curated, now cracked and heaved by roots that push through the fractures. Evening rain still beads on the boxwood domes, releasing sharp scent of crushed thyme and wet soil, while distant gas lamps from the mansion spill slanted rectangles of gold across the damp gravel, carving long shadows from the armed guards’ coats as they move between the hedges. The space feels cloistered despite its openness, the high walls blocking wind and muffling the mutter of voices, trapping the scent in pockets.
