This includes both the aboveground bioengineered forest area and the specific ground area where violent confrontations occur. The grove’s ancient trees stand as gnarled sentinels against blackened bark from acidic taint of hybrid experiments, their branches twisting into grotesque shapes. Thick underbrush of cultivated foliage chokes the forest floor, releasing oppressive vegetal stench mixed with coppery tang of spilled blood. The ground here is patchy with unmelted snow, featuring crystalline edges grating against rough metal debris from struggles. Engineered plants shunt nutrients unnaturally in the underbrush while the forest canopy encloses conflicts happening below. This environment comprises a living system that both hides experiments and serves as arenas where deformed men attack the Doctor and Peri. The tree that serves as attack fulcrum shows heartwood hollowed by parasitic grafts, its leaves curled inward from horror witnessed. During Konrad’s attack, the snow-patched ground yields underfoot, with metal scrap kicking up slush as the Doctor and Peri struggle against their attackers.
