Thames River Opposite Bank

The narrow, pebbled shoreline on the southern bank of the Thames directly across from Albert Embankment's gas-lit walkway. Wet cobblestones glisten under the dimming light of the overcast sky, their surface broken only by the scattered debris carried downstream by the sluggish river. The water's edge is lined with slick algae-covered rocks, their jagged edges half-hidden beneath the lapping tide. On this bank, the industrial rhythms of the city fade into a tense stillness, disrupted only by the Doctor's labored breathing and the distant putter of Lupton's stolen motorboat disappearing around the bend. The air carries the brackish tang of the Thames, thickened by diesel fumes from passing vessels and the damp chill of decaying wood from rotting pilings jutting from the water. The opposite bank looms as a shadowed barrier, its skeletal buildings and skeletal trees creating a horizon that feels both close and infinitely far under the weight of this pursuit.
