Back of the Nostalgia Trips Bus

The rear compartment of the Nostalgia Trips bus is a cramped, utilitarian space hushed by the vehicle’s constant hum. Fluorescent strips flicker overhead, casting uneven light across exposed wiring harnesses and jury-rigged support brackets that groan under the strain of yesterday’s hard landing. A large crystalline structure—Mel’s hastily assembled escape route—dominates the center, its faceted surface pulsing with unstable energy that illuminates the faces of the gathered aliens in flickering violet highlights. The air smells of ozone and hot metal, thickened by the scent of Mel’s tool oil and Murray’s nervous sweat. Emergency seals hiss air in and out, each gust carrying a whiff of the carnival-sweet stink lingering from the front of the bus. Beneath the decking, the road noise drops away into a mechanical murmur, leaving only the sound of Delta’s rhythmic breathing and the occasional metallic tinkle of adjusting alloys.
