The area consists of closely packed shops with large plate-glass windows that catch the shifting light of the encroaching crisis. The pavement outside the parade is narrow, forcing Phillips’s car to halt abruptly when the invisible force seizes it. The street’s edges show sporadic litter from earlier looting, mixing with the scent of exhaust and the metallic tang of nearby gunfire. Despite the proximity to danger, the riot hasn’t yet reached this space; the silence outside the jeweller’s door feels fragile, held only by the flimsy glass separating normality from terror.
