Object
Dumbwaiter Escape Ropes
Rough hemp ropes running through the dumbwaiter’s pulley system, their fibers frayed from lack of use but still capable of bearing weight. These ropes serve a dual purpose: they originally supported the dumbwaiter’s wooden shelf during vertical movement between floors, and later became a means of manual escape from the basement prison. The ropes groan under strain as Jago and Litefoot test them, their hands gripping the bristly strands to judge their soundness; dust and grime darken the strands where they’ve rubbed against the wooden frame, a testament to years of disuse. Each pull sends a shudder through the entire mechanism, underscoring the precariousness of trusting their escape to this forgotten lifeline.
