The barn door bolt is a simple yet pivotal object in this moment. Initially unused, it becomes the Silurian’s last line of defense when the policeman arrives. The creature’s desperate shove sends the bolt sliding home with a dull thud, sealing the door shut. The bolt is flimsy—barely more than a metal rod—but in this context, it symbolizes the fragile boundary between life and capture.
