Tunnel Ambush and TARDIS Vulnerability

The gas masks (respirators), retrieved from Lane’s pack, are a futile attempt to protect the soldiers from the fungal spores. Arnold’s confidence in them ('I reckon we shall be all right in these') is immediately undermined by the ambush—the masks offer no defense as the fungus erupts. Their failure highlights the Intelligence’s ability to adapt to human countermeasures, turning even basic precautions into meaningless gestures.

Before: Stored in Lane’s pack, unused but available for the mission.

After: Discarded in the tunnel, either torn off during the ambush or left behind as the soldiers flee/vanish. Their uselessness is a grim reminder of the Intelligence’s superiority.
