Withered strands of evergreen mistletoe, bound among dried herbs and sprigs of unknown botanical origin, hang from the incense brazier’s curved iron arms. Its pale leaves glow faintly in the temple’s smoky twilight, the only natural color against the obsidian altar and rusted ceremonial blade. Martha and De Vries handle the plant with reverent care, positioning it beside the knife as an offering to the goddess they invoke.
