Thick, coiled leather straps looped through brass buckles, the reins end in rough-cut leather reins loops still attached to the broken cart harness when the miners attack. The leather shows deep creases from uneven tension, one strap frayed where a miner’s desperate grip tore through the stitching mid-swing. The brass buckles are smeared with red mineral dust from the miners’ manipulations, their usual purpose—guidance and control of the horse—perverted into a weapon when swung like a flail to slash across machinery components.
