Sabotaged Canoe of the Doctor and Romana

The hollowed-timber canoe, normally smooth and unremarkable among Swampie vessels, bears fresh axe-gouges along its gunwales where Rohm-Dutt’s explosives failed to detonate. Its bark-thin hull rests half-submerged in reed-choked shallows, tipped onto its side as if cast aside after a struggle. Dark smears along the gunwales suggest recent contact with the murky swamp water stirred by Kroll’s violent emergence. The vessel’s condition—once seaworthy, now rendered defective—mirrors the colonists’ faltering confidence in their mission.
