Here, the lift serves as both transit and trap—the Doctor barely escapes an ambush when the lift’s doors open onto armed smugglers, forcing him into a risky confrontation. Its sterile functionality becomes a site of exposure as mandrels burst through its doors, turning everyday transit into brutal violence.

Doctor gives chase to smuggling suspect

The lift becomes a contested escape route when the smuggler dives inside just as the Doctor approaches, switching the chase vertically. Though the Doctor chooses the stairs to outpace him, the lift remains a viable escape path for the fugitive, forcing the Doctor to gamble on familiarity with the Empress’s layout to maintain pursuit from above to below.
