The Best of Both Worlds, Part I

When the Borg attack a Federation colony, Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew face a terrifying enemy who seeks to assimilate them, leading to Picard's capture and transformation, threatening Earth itself.

The USS Enterprise arrives at Jouret Four to find a Federation colony completely missing. Admiral Hanson and Lt. Commander Shelby arrive to assess the situation, suspecting the Borg, a cybernetic race that assimilates other species. Shelby's aggressive pursuit of defensive strategies clashes with Commander Riker's more cautious approach, especially when she takes command of Data and La Forge without his permission.

As the Enterprise investigates, Riker is offered a captaincy, forcing him to confront his career ambitions and his loyalty to Picard. Tension mounts as Shelby openly expresses her ambition to take Riker's position. During a poker game, Shelby's calculated play reveals her drive, further fueling the rivalry between her and Riker.

The Enterprise encounters a Borg cube, and the Borg demand Picard surrender himself; when he refuses, they attack. Despite the Enterprise's efforts, the Borg's technology quickly adapts to their defenses. The Borg begin cutting into the ship. As casualties mount, the Enterprise manages to escape into the Paulson Nebula, using its unique composition to evade the Borg's sensors. Inside the nebula, the crew works tirelessly to adapt their defenses. Shelby proposes separating the saucer section, but Riker dismisses it.

Shelby goes behind Riker's back and suggests her plan to Picard, causing further friction. During the Enterprise's attempt to hide in the nebula, the Borg uses magnetometric charges to flush them out. Picard orders the ship out of the nebula and the Borg lock a tractor beam on the starship. The Borg materialize onto the bridge, and abduct Picard. The Borg ship then heads directly towards Earth.

Riker assumes command and the Enterprise pursues. An away team led by Shelby beams onto the Borg ship to rescue Picard, discovering his uniform and, ultimately, a transformed Picard, now Locutus of Borg. He proclaims that resistance is futile. The team barely escapes as Picard/Locutus and other Borg surround them. Despite Beverly's pleas to save Picard, Riker realizes that the only chance to stop the Borg from reaching Earth is to use a high-risk strategy: rerouting all power to the main deflector dish, which will destroy the Borg ship but could also destroy the Enterprise. Locutus hails the Enterprise, reiterating the futility of resistance. With a heavy heart, Riker orders the deflector weapon to fire.

Act 1

The Enterprise arrives at Jouret Four, investigating a distress call from a Federation colony that has mysteriously vanished. An away team, including Riker, Geordi, Data, and Worf, beams down to find the colony site completely scooped out, leaving only a shallow depression. This discovery immediately establishes a grave and unknown threat. Admiral Hanson and Lieutenant Commander Shelby, a highly ambitious tactical specialist, arrive to assess the situation, quickly confirming suspicions that the Borg are responsible. Shelby's aggressive approach to tactical analysis and her open ambition to become Riker's first officer create immediate tension. Picard learns that Riker has repeatedly declined command of the USS Melbourne, a decision that Hanson believes is hindering Riker's career. Shelby further disregards Riker's authority by taking Data and Geordi on an unscheduled away mission to the colony site, where she confirms the distinctive magnetic-resonance traces left by the Borg. This act effectively sets the stage for the Borg threat, introduces the central character conflicts, and highlights Riker's internal struggle with his career path, contrasting his cautious leadership with Shelby's aggressive drive.

Act 2

Captain Picard confronts Riker about his reluctance to accept a captaincy, urging him to embrace new challenges and grow beyond his current role on the Enterprise. Riker, in turn, confides in Counselor Troi, expressing his internal conflict between the comfort and familiarity of his position and his past ambition, noting Shelby's drive as a stark reminder of what he perceives he has lost. Meanwhile, Shelby's relentless pursuit of defensive strategies pushes the engineering team to the brink of exhaustion, forcing Riker to assert his command and order a break, further highlighting the clash between their leadership philosophies. The external threat intensifies as Admiral Hanson reports the destruction of the USS Lalo by a cube-shaped vessel, confirming the Borg's aggressive advance into Federation space. The Enterprise then makes direct visual contact with the Borg cube, signaling an imminent and unavoidable confrontation. This act deeply explores Riker's character arc, forcing him to confront his career choices and leadership style, while simultaneously escalating the immediate and tangible danger posed by the Borg.

Act 3

The Borg cube initiates communication, specifically hailing Captain Picard by name and demanding his surrender, revealing an unsettling and personal interest in him. The Enterprise engages the Borg, deploying newly modulated shields and fluctuating phaser frequencies in a desperate attempt to defend itself. However, the Borg's rapid adaptive capabilities quickly render these defenses ineffective. The Borg lock a tractor beam onto the Enterprise and begin cutting into the hull, causing severe damage and significant casualties in Main Engineering. In a last-ditch effort, the Enterprise fires another round of fluctuating phaser frequencies, temporarily disrupting the Borg's tractor beam, and escapes into the dense Paulson Nebula to hide. While concealed, Shelby proposes a high-risk plan to separate the saucer section as a diversion, but Riker dismisses the idea as too dangerous. Undeterred, Shelby bypasses Riker's chain of command and presents her plan directly to Picard, leading to a heated confrontation where Riker sternly warns her against undermining his authority again. This act dramatically escalates the Borg threat, demonstrates their overwhelming power, and intensifies the personal and professional conflict between Riker and Shelby.

Act 4

Concealed within the Paulson Nebula, Captain Picard reflects on the dire existential threat posed by the Borg, engaging in a somber discussion with Guinan in Ten-Forward. Guinan, drawing on her own people's experience with the Borg, offers a message of resilience and hope, assuring Picard that humanity will endure even if their current civilization faces destruction. However, the Borg relentlessly pursue the Enterprise, employing magnetometric charges to systematically flush the starship out of its hiding place in the nebula. Forced into the open, the Enterprise is immediately caught in the Borg's powerful tractor beam. Borg drones then materialize on the bridge, demonstrating their chilling ability to rapidly adapt to Starfleet's phaser frequencies, rendering defensive fire useless. Despite Riker and Worf's valiant efforts to protect him, Captain Picard is captured and dematerialized aboard the Borg cube. The Borg ship then sets a direct, ominous course for Sector 001, the Terran system, transforming the conflict into an immediate and direct threat to Earth itself. This act marks a pivotal turning point, with Picard's abduction leaving Riker in command and the Borg heading directly for the Federation's core.

Act 5

Riker assumes command of the Enterprise, grappling with the immense responsibility as the Borg ship, with Picard aboard, accelerates towards Earth. An away team, led by Shelby and including Data, Worf, and Beverly, beams onto the Borg cube with the dual objectives of rescuing Picard and disabling the ship. On the Borg vessel, they discover Picard's neatly folded uniform and communicator, confirming his capture. They soon locate Picard, but he has been horrifically transformed into Locutus of Borg, a cybernetically enhanced spokesman for the collective, who chillingly declares, "Resistance is futile." The away team barely escapes as Locutus and other Borg drones surround them. Back on the bridge, Riker faces an impossible choice: attempt a desperate rescue of the assimilated Picard or destroy the Borg ship before it reaches Earth. Despite Beverly's emotional pleas to save Picard, Riker, recognizing the existential threat to the entire Federation, makes the agonizing decision to use the experimental deflector weapon. This weapon, while capable of destroying the Borg ship, also carries the risk of destroying the Enterprise. Locutus hails the Enterprise one last time, reiterating his chilling message, and Riker, with a heavy heart and unwavering resolve, orders the weapon to fire, setting up a monumental cliffhanger.
