Sacrifice is a recurring motif, manifesting in both physical and psychological suffering. Sarah Jane Smith is repeatedly subjected to life-threatening peril, used as leverage by Sutekh to break the Doctor’s will. Yet her suffering is framed not as pointless but as a crucible that forges her resolve and trust in the Doctor. For the Doctor, sacrifice is internalized—his submission to Sutekh’s control is a calculated gambit to protect Sarah, allowing him to survive and later outmaneuver the villain. Scarman’s arc embodies tragic sacrifice: his brief liberation is immediately annihilated, revealing how devotion to a tyrant offers no true reward, only erasure.
